Oriental Cockroach. Blatta orientalis. Part 1

 The origin of the oriental cockroach, Blatta orientalis Linnaeus, is uncertain, but it is thought to be from Africa or south Russia. It is a major household pest in parts of the northwest, mid-west, and southern United States. It is also sometimes referred to as the "black beetle" or a "water bug" because of its dark black appearance and tendency to harbor in damp locations.

 The Smoky Brown Cockroach is uniformly mahogany brown in color, with no other distinctive lines or colorations. It is closely related to the American cockroach, but smaller in size at just over 1 inch. Both male and female Smoky Browns have wings longer than their bodies.

 The Australian Cockroach is similar in appearance to the American cockroach, reddish-brown in color, and winged. However, the Australian cockroach is slightly smaller than the American, growing to be approximately 1 1/4"-1 3/8". The Australian Cockroach also has a yellow margin on the thorax, and yellow streaks at its sides at the base of the wings.

 The Australian cockroach is one of several species of peridomestic cockroaches (cockroaches that live mostly outdoors, but occasionally may be found indoors) and the most common cockroach species found outdoors in southern Florida.
